Lost in translation

I remember about a movie that I watched. Its called “lost in translation”. I think I remembered about it because I saw a post on social media that its director who was in a relationship with another director had recently went through divorce. And she made this movie to tell her side of story.

The more interesting thing is that a few years later his ex husband also made a movie called “Her” and he casted same lead actress.

The story of “lost in translation” is of a man. He goes to japan for a business trip and gets frustrated with the language barrier between him and the world. He feels very lonely and then he meets a girl, who was also american and had come there with her husband and her husband was so busy in work that she felt neglected. They dont exactly fall in love. but what they showed in the movie felt a lot like extramarital affair to me. And obviosly I did not like it.

I dont know why I got reminded of it suddenly, but now that I think of it, the director misunderstood “lost in translation”. She did not know the pain of talking to the person you love and still not really talking to them. she did not know how painful it is to rely on an app just to be able to talk to the person you love the most in the world. She did not know the pain of having to translate your soul.

Things like, “I want a bread”, or “I want a hotel for two nights” dont get lost in translation. they are same, everywhere. But its the emotions, its our feelings that take so much damage when translating. People are not even good at communicating how they feel when they are talking in their native language, and translation just does so much more damage. that is what a real loss is.

And who can blame her for not understanding? How many people we know of who have fallen in love but dont speak a common language? maybe in a movie or something. But this is just unimaginable in real life. And that’s the most painful thing. Its a pain that no one else can understand. And if somone gets to know about it, they find it so confusing, crazy and stupid.

I do not beleive that we are supposed to speak our native language our entire life. I mean, right now  I am writing flawlessly in a language that I did not know a few years ago. And now its in my entire life. Its become the language of my thoughts. and its not my native language. not by any means.

And the role of technology is also interesting. Its so great that it allows us to connect with each other even if we lack something as basic as a common language. and I am grateful for it. But I also hate myself for over relying on it. Its just so stupid that I trusted an app to do the most important part of my life.

I don’t know what I wanted to say in this blog. But one thing is for sure. I feel so bad after realizing that I had to endure something much worse that what most people consider “lost in translation”.

The Art of Synchronisation

One of the biggest and most complicated challenges in computer science as well as science in general is the challenge of synchronisation. Weather its to synchronise data or to synchronise two events. To some extent, synchronising data is simpler, but synchronising two events is impossible.  Two physical events happening in real life can never be synchronised. Its mathematically impossible. Why? Well its mathematically impossible for two values in the real world to be identical. For example let's take two stones which are exactly same weight, shape, size and material and drop them exactly from the same height. They will appear to be dropping at the same time but they are in fact not dropping at the same time.  To prove this...

The emotional dilemma

Sometimes I ask this question to myself, and I have been asking this question a lot more lately.  “should we allow our emotions to fluctuate or should we train ourselves to always remain in a stable state emotionally?” To be honest, its really a question of preference, I see advantages and disadvantages in both approaches.  As a man I feel like its quite essential for me to have a good control over my emotions and not let it come in my way of work. And I have been quite good at it. There are instances when I have been in a terrible shape emotionally but I did not let it affect my work even a bit. But this is what is shown on the outside. To the entire world. I am good at it. But I am thinking about inside in this question.  what should happen to it?  From this logic it makes sense to just train myself to be completely emotionally flatlined. Be someone who does not get upset too much when  something goes wrong, or does not get too sad when gets hit with a c...

All language is but a poor translation

Recently I came across this Quote by Franz Kafka.  “All Language is but a poor translation”.  Or as I like to say it, “A language is nothing but a poor translation of feelings”. And the more I think about it, It makes more sense.  On first thought, this idea seems conflicting. We made the languages, and every culture in the world should have perfected this skill to be able to express themselves completely, right? Well, Not really.  I am fortunate enough to know more than one language and I can see this gap between languages where no one is really perfect to be able to express ourselves completely.  Even with my native language, Urdu. There have been times when I have felt a certain way towards someone or towards myself and did not know how I could have expressed that. And I am sure you must have felt this way too. There are some things that just can not be expressed in the most perfect way that we would like to express them. No matter which language we use...
